Ritu Kumar’s Ethnic Wear Collection at Lakme Fashion Week 2015

Ritu Kumar, the veteran fashion designer, is famous for the ethnic sarees, lehengas and kurtis that she designs. At the recent Lakme Fashion Week Winter-Festive 2015, she showcased her latest collection of apparels. She has aptly named her collection ‘Varanasi Weaves’ and through her work she pays a homage to the traditional silk weavers of Benaras. Her ethnic designs and intricate workmanship were greatly appreciated by the audience as well as the critics. She had especially hired 50 weavers from Benaras for this work. Due to her emphasis on Indian roots, her work was supported by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Kumar mainly focuses on specific colours like cream, off-white and white. But her collection also displays vibrant colours like aubergine, brown, purple, fuchsia and rani pink. Golden hues dominate the whole of the show. She uses regal and heavy fabrics like Banarasi silk, chanderi silk, cotton silk, satin, silk in general, georgette and velvet. The final results are therefore magical and awe-inspiring. Kumar uses a lot of detail in the vintage style and motifs such as badami, kyari, shikargah and beautiful floral butis.

The models are given a number of attractive accessories like slim belts, big round bangles, broad armlets and round golden earrings. Most of them are wearing an ethnic zari topi which heightens their looks to a great extent. There is also a vibrant collection of churidaars which depict the traditional Benarasi silk. A few beautiful cream dresses are also showcased which look modern but the fabric used makes them very much an ethnic dress.

The show starts with a number of cream, white and off-white kurtis which are combined with palazzo pants of the same colour. This is followed by sarees and lehengas of the same colours but with the accompaniment of elaborate golden designs. After this, there is a riot of colours mainly dominated by reddish hues. But there is also a generous amount of black, golden, blue, pink and many other bright colours. We get to see Kumar’s collection of beautiful sarees, lehengas and salwars. Be it kurtis or salwars, palazzo pants take the cake away with most of her creations being accompanied by these. There is also a great bridal collection towards the end. Actress Aditi Rao Hydari turned out to be the show-stopper in a stunning fuchsia brocade saree with brocade pink blouse and golden churidar.
